I remember him speaking of his love for this game awhile ago. It sticks out in my mind because of all the games out there it is the one I’ve have played consistently since it’s release. In fact it is one of the very few game series where by the time a sequel comes out and I get it home I have to remove the previous version from the system since I had been playing that previous version right up until the new version came out. (Halo might be the only other, but I digress.)

Will Wright (creator of Sim City, The Sims and Spore) says:

“While I drink my coffee I pull out my DS and play Advance Wars,” he said. “I’ve played that game more than any other in my life. I love Advance Wars, it lets me relax while I spin up my brain.”

Advance Wars for those of you who don’t know is a turn based strategy game for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS consoles. There are currently 4 versions here in the US – Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2, Advance Wars Dual Strike and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The former 2 being for the GBA and the later 2 the DS. If I had to pick I’d say Dual Strike is my favorite – but it’s like . It is sort of the culmination of everything to that point – tons of maps, co’s and unit types – where Days of Ruin is more of a reboot rebalanced for multiplayer play (less units, all new co’s) and set in a “darker” world then the previous games.

There is a paper toy site called “Ninjatoes’ Papercraft webpage” that hosts a ton of Advance Wars inspired papercraft. You can check it out here.

As you can see by the Amazon prices below it can be hard to get some of the older versions of the game. Gamestop’s website has Days of Ruin for $10 new. You might want to hit ebay for the others.

Interesting article over at Ars Technica about web users who run ad blockers.

“There is an oft-stated misconception that if a user never clicks on ads, then blocking them won’t hurt a site financially. This is wrong. Most sites, at least sites the size of ours, are paid on a per view basis.”

What’s this have to do with Cubeecraft? Hit the jump to read on.

I post it here because I get emails every week from people who see nothing on the homepage because they are running ad blockers – since the images on the homepage are 300×250 (a standard ad size) most blockers seem to just not load them. This was an unintentional side effect of a design decision when creating the homepage that has caused a bit of grief, but has opened my eyes to the large a mount of people running blockers and how in the long run they may be hurting sites like this one. Each Cubeecraft is about 1/2 a MB, and there are thousands of visitors a day so you can imagine bandwidth gets pretty out of hand very quickly. I manage though and have been able to avoid hosting files on file sharing sites like a lot of the other paper toy creators*. You may have noticed recently that there are a few more ads on the site – I have tried to keep them as unobtrusive as possible because I want the experience on the site to be as good as possible since that is the way I like it when I am browsing the web.

People write me concerned that this will become a pay site at some point. I don’t know where they got the idea but I’ve heard it more than once now so I will just come out and say it – Cubeecraft will never be a pay site. There is a skeleton of a store, and the store will be growing within the next year but even then it will only offer specialty items that most people could not simply download and print.

Anyway I hope you are enjoying the site! Be sure to check out what’s going on on the Cubeecraft Network (there’s a bunch of people doing a lot of nice work), visit the official Cubeecraft Deviantart page for a bunch of Cubeecraft you can only get there and check out Cubeecraft on Facebook and Twitter and be on the lookout for a bunch of new stuff coming soon.

Thanks for your support!

*not that there is anything wrong with that.

Here was the table setup at last week New York Comic Book Marketplace. This was my first con ever. In addition to the standard Cubeecraft from the site that were just on display there were a couple of special items for sale:

Red Eye Robot Large Kit – One of two large original kits available. Each one creates a Cubeecraft that is about 8″ tall. The Red Eye Robot features a panel on his chest that opens to reveal his secret power source.

Dead-Sea Diver Large Kit – The second large original kit available. The Dead-Sea Diver features an opening mask that reveals his terrifying face!

Blank template sketches – I had blank templates ready to be sketched on.

Dead-Sea Diver mini-kit – Standard size version of the Dead-Sea Diver but still features an opening mask. Also includes a blank template. Each kit is also signed.

Produkt01 – A signed and numbered limited edition of 75 originally created for a Too Art 4 TV show awhile back. I only have a few left.

Cubeecraft Flyers – These actually weren’t for sale they were just flyers for the site I gave away.

You may also notice an 8″ version of the Produkt01 in the upper right, that was just a 1-off for this con.

My table was sandwhiched between a couple artist friends of mine – Khary Randolph, Nelson Diaz and Jimmy Tran.

The kits will be con exclusives for awhile (at least until I can figure out the best way to ship them and get a store online…). I’ll probably be doing a few more cons later this year.

Thanks to Marni for all her help! Thanks to Ben for the sketch commission!
