Super-Hero Television
(This is sort of a response to a video blog on Slashfilm which you can see here.)
I am a big Super-Hero fan, DC, Marvel or independent it’s all good. Today on Slashfilm they brought up the idea of a Marvel Universe live action show. I’m sure any fan of any of these books has thought of this, especially with the movies building up the The Avengers as they are now.
I’ve often thought that a Marvel live action series connected to the movies would be great. Daredevil for instance wouldn’t require to much in the way of special effects and the show could basically be like any other lawyer show except with a fight once in awhile. Daredevil would also be a good character to build the universe around as he deals with people from all walks of life and his friends with a great many of the heroes and he also deals with a lot of the villains. Regular appearances by Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Frank Castle (The Punisher) etc would totally fit. If it didn’t specifically revolve around Daredevil and perhaps each episode focused on one hero but was somehow part of a larger story that would also be pretty awesome. (I guess you could call the show “Marvels” at that point.)
DC has sort of already done this to some extent with Smallville and though it wasn’t live action the Justice League Unlimited animated series (which I highly recommend) though I hear the new Avengers animated series might go in that direction as well.
The guys on Slashfilm also bring up “Gotham City Police” (he means Gotham Central by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka) which to me also seems like a no brainer for a series considering how many police shoes are on the air. The twist here is that they operate in a universe where Batman, The Joker and Mr.Freeze all exist and they have to juggle just being cops with worrying about this masked vigilante and these “freaks”. Apart from Clayface there aren’t to many Batman villains who have real super powers, it’s just costumes.
This sounds just a bit like Bendis’s Powers I guess and I have heard that it is being developed as a series…
Random list of live action super hero television: Batman (with Adam West), Superman (with George Reeves), Lois and Clark, Smallville, Wonder Woman, Shazam, M.A.N.T.I.S., Heroes, The Greatest American hero, The incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, The Flash, unaired JLA Pilot, Superboy, My Secret identity, Birds of Prey, Swamp Thing, Isis, The Tick… what am I forgetting?
My point is there have been a lot of Super Hero television in the past and I am sure there is going to be a lot more in the future.
What heroes would you like to see on the small screen?

John Byrne’s Next Men would make a great Fugitive style show.
